Start with the cartridge and housing
A partially clogged filter, an incorrect cartridge or an incompletely locked filter can reduce dispenser flow. Remove and reinstall the cartridge according to the appliance instructions; do not force it or assume that a similar-looking part is compatible.
Inspect the housing and the floor of the refrigerator for leakage. A leak, leak-detection message or damaged housing is a reason to stop testing and follow the manufacturer’s service guidance.
Flush the new filter using its own instructions
New carbon cartridges can release trapped air and loose carbon fines. Manufacturers do not use one universal flush volume: LG gives an approximately 2.5-gallon or five-minute sequence for certain refrigerators, while Samsung describes dispensing several gallons. Use the exact manual for the appliance and cartridge, and dispense in controlled intervals.
If the flow sputters briefly after installation, continue only within the manufacturer’s stated procedure. Persistent low flow is a troubleshooting problem, not a reason to keep forcing water through the system.
Use a bypass test only when the refrigerator supports it
Some refrigerators can operate with a model-specific bypass plug or automatic bypass. On supported GE models, compare dispenser flow with the filter removed and the correct bypass plug installed. If flow improves with the bypass, the filter or its installation is a likely cause; if flow remains poor, look upstream.
Bypass operation sends water around the filter. It can help isolate the restriction, but it does not provide filtered water.
Check the water supply if bypass flow is still slow
A kinked supply tube, a restricted valve or low incoming water pressure can reduce flow even when the filter is not installed. GE’s dispenser-flow guidance uses a timed fill check and directs users to investigate the supply when bypass flow also fails.
Do not change plumbing or pressure controls beyond the appliance instructions. If the refrigerator leaks, stops dispensing completely or reports a leak, use the manufacturer’s support or service route.
When to replace the filter or stop troubleshooting
Record the refrigerator model, cartridge part number and what changed during the test. That evidence makes manufacturer support more useful and prevents a second incompatible purchase.
- Replace a filter that is at its rated service limit or remains restrictive after correct installation and flushing
- Use only the bypass plug specified for the full refrigerator model
- Stop immediately when there is a leak, damaged housing or a leak-detection warning
- Escalate persistent low flow that remains with the correct bypass setup
