Why flushing matters
A newly installed carbon filter can contain trapped air and loose carbon fines. Flushing also helps confirm that the cartridge is seated without leakage.
Use the exact instructions
Manufacturer guidance varies. LG gives an approximately 2.5-gallon or five-minute sequence for certain filters, while Samsung directs users to dispense several gallons. Use the exact appliance manual when available.
A safe sequence
If water stops, sputters continuously or the housing leaks, stop and verify fit rather than applying more force.
- Install the cartridge fully without forcing it
- Inspect the housing for leakage
- Dispense water in controlled intervals
- Discard the flushed water
- Reset the indicator only after successful flow
What black specks usually indicate
Small dark particles immediately after installation are commonly loose carbon fines. They should clear with the specified flush. Persistent debris or unusual odor warrants stopping and checking the cartridge and source water.
