The practical answer
GE lists XWF as superseded by XWFE and states that XWFE is compatible with refrigerators that use XWF. Newer refrigerators designed around XWFE can depend on electronic interaction with the filter.
Why the cartridges are not symmetrical
The newer filter family communicates with compatible refrigerator controls. An older XWF lacks that behavior, so using it in a refrigerator that requires XWFE can produce an error and disable dispensing.
How to decide
- If the installed cartridge says XWFE, replace it with XWFE unless GE confirms otherwise for the full refrigerator model
- If the refrigerator originally specifies XWF, GE lists XWFE as the superseding cartridge
- Do not infer fit from appearance alone
Check the complete model
Model-year transitions can overlap. Use the full refrigerator model number and GE’s current parts lookup before purchasing.
