Why the cartridges are not symmetrical

The newer filter family communicates with compatible refrigerator controls. An older XWF lacks that behavior, so using it in a refrigerator that requires XWFE can produce an error and disable dispensing.

How to decide

• If the installed cartridge says XWFE, replace it with XWFE unless GE confirms otherwise for the full refrigerator model
