How often should a refrigerator water filter be replaced?

Use the manufacturer’s time-or-capacity limit for the exact cartridge and refrigerator, whichever comes first.

Six months is common, not universal

Many major refrigerator-filter families specify replacement at approximately six months. Some also provide a gallon capacity such as 170, 200 or 300 gallons. The exact manual and performance sheet control.

Replace sooner when the rated capacity is reached

A high-use household can reach the gallon rating before six months. Reduced flow can also indicate loading, but it can have other causes such as supply pressure, a partially closed valve or an installation problem.

Do not extend life because the water still tastes fine

Taste and odor are not reliable indicators of all contaminants. A filter’s rated service life is based on test conditions and its exact claim set, not on whether the water remains pleasant.
